You’ve heard about many famous British writers such as Charles Dickens, Jerome K. Jerome, W. Scott and many others. The name of Arthur Conan Doyle is not so well known as the name of his character - Sherlock Holmes. And now we’ll get acquainted with him. But at first let’s get information about Arthur Conan Doyle. II. Информация об авторе. Учащиеся рассказывают биографию А. К. Дойля. P u p i l 1. Arthur Conan Doyle was bom in 1859 in the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. His father, Charles E. Doyle, was an artist and architect by profession, but he worked as a clerk in an office. He died young and the Doyles were very poor. Arthur’s mother was a very good storyteller. The talent of story telling was inherited by Arthur from his mother and it helped him as a writer. During his school years he read much, and he often told his school friends long and interesting stories, getting cake and sweets for that. After leaving school Conan Doyle became a student of the medical faculty at the university of Edinburgh. In his third year of studies he went as a ship doctor to the Arctic and upon graduating from the university, he again went by ship to western Africa. P u p i l 2. He began his medical practice in a small English town Southsea, where he spent eight years. In 1887, he published his first detective story “A study in Scarlet”. Its main characters were Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, and they became the most popular characters of a great many of Conan Doyle’s stories. “A scandal in Bohemia” opened a collection of detective stories under the title “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”. The story was published in 1891 and soon after that Baker Street became the well- known address of Sherlock Holmes. The readers asked for more and more stories about Sherlock Holmes and Conan Doyle was writing them for two years. When he had written about twenty stories with Sherlock Holmes as the main detective, he was so tired of these stories that he decided to “kill” Sherlock Holmes. He wrote a story, which he named “Holmes’s last case” (1893). But the readers did not wish to lose their favourite character and ten years later the famous detective appeared again. In 1901-1902 one of Conan Doyle’s best stories “The hound of the Baskervilles” was published. P u p i l 3. In 1891 Conan Doyle gave up his medical work and devoted all his time to his literary activity. He also travelled much. Beside detective stories, Conan Doyle also wrote historic novels, war books and an anticolonial book about the Belgian Congo. All his life Conan Doyle liked sport; he skied, played golf and went in for boxing. He died in 1930. After his death, the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, together with his friend Dr Watson, continued to live on the pages of Conan Doyle’s books. They are among the favourite characters of English literature. Tourists coming to London always go to visit Baker Street to see the house where Sherlock Holmes lived. III. Посещение музея. Знакомство с Шерлоком Холмсом. Звучит музыка из фильма о Шерлоке Холмсе. У ч и т е л ь . Thank you very much for your story. Now it’s time to visit 221b Baker Street. Here you can find the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Учащиеся рассказывают о музее. Идёт показ презентации. P u p i l 1. The Sherlock Holmes Museum was opened in 1990 though it should have happened long ago. 221b Baker Street is the world’s most famous address and people have been writing to it for more than 100 years. In the Sherlock Holmes Museum you step back a hundred years in time. There are no horrors, no mummies or hidden corpses, no wax figures. But you have a feeling that the great detective had just left the room for the moment with Dr Watson, and Mrs Hudson is somewhere in the kitchen. P u p i l 2. Everything in the museum reminds us the stories we know so well. It is filled with things which Holmes and Watson would have had - Holmes’s violin, his deer-stalker and pipe, the Persian slippers, etc. The Sherlock Holmes Museum is unlike other museums. Very little here is locked up in glass cases. You can sit in Holmes’s armchair by the fireplace, you can examine his things and put on his deer-stalker. P u p i l 3. People have been writing to this address for the last 100 years. Greeting cards arrive at Christmas and on Holmes’s birthday (he was bom on January, 6th). Sherlock Holmes is very popular and loved by thousands people. The Sherlock Holmes Adventures have been filmed for cinema, serialized for television, dramatized for stage and radio and published in at least 40 languages. P u p i l 4. Films and books about Sherlock Holmes are also popular in Russia. Vasili Livanov played as Sherlock Holmes. He is considered to be the best Sherlock Holmes in the world. On the 22nd of February, 2006, Elizabeth II, the British Queen rewarded him by the Order of the British Empire for his role. The Queen thinks that he is the best. After that in April, 2007, in Moscow, near the British Embassy a sculpture composition to Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson was opened. It is 800 kilos and made of bronze. P u p i l 5. Order of the British Empire. Орден Британской империи был основан в 1917 году. Его девиз«За Бога и империю» (“For God and the Empire”). Гроссмейстером ордена является правящий монарх Великобритании.
