5 basic intonational constructions (ИК) IC-1 Intonation of a short declarative sentence: Вот наш дом. Here is our house. Это моя подруга Анна. This is my friend Ann. Я учусь в университете. I study at the university. The intonation falls on the last stressed syllable of the phrase. At the end of the sentence stands a period (.) IC-2 Intonation of a short interrogative sentence with an interrogative pronoun: Кто это? Где он живёт? Куда ты идёшь? Who is he (she)? Where does he live? Where do you go to? The intonation falls on the first stressed syllable of the phrase. At the end of the sentence stands a question mark (?). IC-3 Intonation of a short interrogative sentence without an interrogative pronoun: Ты студент? Are you a student? Это твоё место? Is it your place? Это интересный фильм? Is this movie interesting? The intonation rises on the word that denote the unknown, then falls. At the end of the sentence stands a question mark(?). IC-4 Intonation in tag questions: - Она студентка. - А он? She is a student. And is he? - Тот фильм был интересный. - А этот? That movie was interesting. And what about this one? The intonation rises on the first stressed syllable of the tag question, than falls and rises sharply at the end. At the end of the sentence stands a question mark (?). IC-5 Intonation in exclamatory sentences: - Как хорошо! How well! - Какая красивая девушка! What a nice girl! - Сколько тут мусора! How much garbage! The intonation rises on the first stressed syllable and falls on the final stressed one. At the end of the sentence stands an exclamation point (!). IC-3 + IC-1 Intonation in choice question: - Это журнал или книга? - Is it a book or a magazine? - Вы работаете или учитесь? - Do you work or study? Combination of structures. The word that expresses the first choice is pronounced using IC-3, whereas the word that expresses the second choice is pronounced using IC-1. The word «или» is pronounced with the rising intonation (IC-3). At the end of the sentence stands a question mark (?). IC – 1+3+…+1 Intonation of enumeration with a generalizing word: Мария купила в магазине разные продукты: рис, мясо, помидоры, хлеб, молоко и сыр. Mary bought in the shop different foods: rice, meat, tomatoes, bread, milk and cheese. The intonation drops on the generalizing word, rises on each stressed word of enumeration, and then falls again on the last stressed syllable of the sentence. General rules In most Russian sentences, the voice pitch falls at the end of the sentence, as we see in intonational constructions 1, 2, 5. It is very important to recognize and use intonational constructions properly, because the meaning of sentences sometimes depends solely on the intonation. Good luck!
