First of all we shall listen to Shakespeare’s biography. I invite two interpreters; they will
translate everything for us.
Pupil 1:
William Shakespeare was born on April 23 in 1564 in Stratford- on Avon, England, where he
received an excellent classical education. At the age of eighteen he married Anne Hathaway, and
they had three children. Shakespeare was playwright and poet. As he rose in popularity, he wrote
plays for the famous Globe Theatre, a round, open-roofed building that housed approximately
2,000 spectators. Later Shakespeare became one of the owners of the Globe Theatre.
Unlike many writers who never live to enjoy their fame, Shakespeare achieved great recognition
during his lifetime.
He wrote three types of plays: comedies, tragedies and histories. He also wrote narrative poems,
sonnets and lyric poetry. He is acknowledged as one of the greatest writers of all time, and has
remained popular with readers around the world.

Pupil 2:
The last half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th centuries are known as the Golden Age
of English Renaissance. Sometimes they are called “The Age of Shakespeare”.
People often call Shakespeare “Our national Bard”, “The Immortal Poet of Nature”. We really
know just few facts of his life and many of them are doubtful. But some facts are known to us
and are proved by documents.
The first fact is that his father was a dealer in wool. William's mother was a daughter of a rich
farmer.
We also know that, being 18 years old, William married Anne Hathaway, who was 9 years older
than himself. They had a daughter Susanna and twins – son Hamlet and daughter Judith.
It's known that in 1567 Shakespeare went to London to find a job, where he began writing plays
staged at the Globe Theatre.
It's known that only in 1611, at the height of his fame, Shakespeare returned to Stratford, where
in April 23, 1616 he died.

Anne: What’s the matter with you, William? You look sad; even the children can’t make you feel
happy.
William: Look here, Anne! I’ve got to go away.
Anne: Why? What do you mean?
William: Stratford’s too small. Too slow. Too quiet. Too boring. I’m going to live in London. I want
to be an actor, and to write plays, if I can.
Anne: Plays! Acting! Actors are dirty wicked people! They are all thieves and criminals! They drink
all day and they never go to church!
William: Don’t be stupid, Anne. You know that’s not true.
Anne: How can you do this to me? And to our children?
William: I’ll come home when I can. But I must go to London. I can’t do anything in Stratford.

Teacher: «Romeo and Juliet» - this wonderful love story is about two lovers, Romeo and Juliet.
Unfortunately, they died, but they didn't stop loving each other. They stayed young forever.
Pupil 1:
Pupil 2:
My love is warmer than the warmest sunshine,
Softer than a sign.
My love is deeper than the deepest ocean,
Wider than the sky.
My love is brighter than the brightest star
That shines every night above.
And there is nothing in this world that can ever
Change my love.
Author: This story is about great love. Many many years ago, two families Montekki and
Capuletti lived in Verona and behaved each other like enemies.
– Lady Montague.
– Lady Capulet.
– Romeo, son to Montague.
– Juliet, daughter to Capulet.
– Mercutio, kinsman to Prince and friend to Romeo.
– Benvolio, a friend to Romeo.
Prince of Verona!
My lords, forget your quarrels for today. Lord Capulet
invite each of us to be his guest so be polite, that’s my request.
Л е д и К а п у л е т т и . Feel at home today. Let’s start the party.
The melody is so sweet.
I can’t help crying at the sound.
Р о м е о . О! My love is coming! Look at her: what lovely lips she has, her smile, her eyes, I
feel that I am head over heels in love with her.
Р о м е о . is she, a girl from my dreams, I wonder?
М е р к у ц и о . Are you crazy? Open your eyes, my friend. She is Capuletti.
Р о м е о . Is she a Capuletti? What can I do? My heart doesn’t listen to me…
My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun,
Coral is far more red than her lips red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are fun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask, red and white;
But no such roses see I her clucks;
And in some perfumes is there move delight
Than music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she wares, treats on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rave
As any she belied with talse compare.
М е р к у ц и о . Have you seen that Romeo?
Б е н в о л и о . I have. In love and out of his mind.
That’s just a usual state of things as if he’s dreaming all the time.
М е р к у ц и о . Oh, DREAMS.
I’ve seen a dream like this.
Б е н в о л и о . Well, WHAT was yours?
М е р к у ц и о . That dreamers often lie.
Б е н в о л и о . Peace, peace, Mercutio, peace!
You talk of nothing.
М е р к у ц и о . True, I talk of dreams,
Which are the children of an idle brain,
Begot of nothing but vain fantasy.
I fear too early. Strike, drum!
Romeo, good night!
I’ll go to my bed.
This field bed is too cold for me to sleep.
Come, shall we go?
Б е н в о л и о . Go then, for it’s in vain to seek him here that means not to be found.
Р о м е о . They are gone!
Р о м е о . What light through window breaks?
It is the East, and Juliet is the sun.
It is my lady, o, it is my love!
See how she leans her cheek upon her hand!
Oh, if I were a glove upon that hand
That I might touch that cheek.
Д ж у л ь е т т а . О Romeo, Romeo! Why are you Romeo?
Deny your father and refuse your name.
Or, if you will not, be but sworn my love
And I’ll no longer be a Capulet!
Р о м е о . Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?
Д ж у л ь е т т а . ‘Tis but your name that is my enemy;
What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. Oh, be some other name!
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell so sweet.
So Romeo would he not Romeo called,
And for that name, which is no part of you.
Take all myself.
Р о м е о . I take you at your word, since then I never will be Romeo.
Д ж у л ь е т т а . By whose direction found you out this place?
Р о м е о . By love, that first did prompt me to inquire.
Д ж у л ь е т т а . Do you love me? I know you’ll say yes and I will take your word.
Р о м е о . Lady, by yonder blessed moon I swear ...
О! Swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon
That monthly changes in her circled orb.
Lest that your love.
Р о м е о . What shall I swear by?
Д ж у л ь е т т а . Do not swear at all.
Good night, good night, my Romeo!
Juliet!
Д ж у л ь е т т а . I hear some noise within. Dear love, goodbye!
Р о м е о . O, blessed, blessed night I am afraid
Being in night all this is but a dream.
Р о м е о . Sleep dwell upon your eyes, peace in your breast!
Would I were sleep and peace, so sweet to rest.
Pupil 1:
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
With alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
Pupil 2:
O no, it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests, and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth`s unknown, although his height be taken.
Pupil 3:
Love`s not Time`s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle`s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error, and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
Pupil 4:
Teacher: Shakespeare writes a lot of sonnets and the main theme of his works is Love. He
describes a difficult position of two young people in Romeo and Juliet: they belong to different
families, who are enemies to each other. They fall in love and nobody can help them. How can
you describe Romeo? What kind of girl is Juliet? What is the end of story?
- Another Shakespeare’s greatest play is “Hamlet”, a story about prince Denmark.
Toby: What play are you working at? Another comedy?
William: No, Toby. There is too much suffering in this world. Something must be done to change the
world, the laws, and the moral. To be or not to be, that is the question.
Toby:(читает) Whether ‘tis noble in the mind, to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune…
William:
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And, by opposing, end them? – To die, - to sleep, No more…
Toby: Great! What will it be?
William: A new tragedy, “Hamlet”. I hope it won’t leave anybody indifferent.
: “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark”. There wasn’t an actor, who wouldn’t dream of playing the part of
Hamlet.
From 1600 to 1608 the dramatist reaches his full maturity.
He presents great human problems in his plays: honor and dignity, humanism and intolerance
towards injustice.
Now we shall watch a part of movie “Anonymous”. The main hero – Hamlet, was truly shown
there.
Pupil 1:
To be or not to be, that is the question:
Whether `tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune:
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing, end them? To die, to sleep –
No more, and, by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh in heir to; `tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep –
To sleep, perchance to dream…
Teacher:
Another poem I liked very much. I hope you will enjoy it as much as me.
Pupil 1:
Who under a star happy is given birth –
Is proud of glory, a title and authority.
And for me love – a source of happiness.
Under the sun magnificently leaves has spread
The confidant of prince, the protégé of the grandee.
But the favorable look dies away the sun,
And the gold sunflower dies away too.
The military leader, the spoilt child of victories,
In fight the last suffers (bears) defeat.
And all his (its) destiny – disgrace and oblivion.
But there is no thereat no titles mine
Life: liked, I like, we like.
Pupil 2:
Sonnet 77
Thy glass will show thee how thy beauties wear,
Thy dial how thy precious minutes waste;
The vacant leaves thy mind’s imprint will bear,
And of this book this learning mayst thou taste.
The wrinkles which thy glass will trutly show
Of mouthed graves will give thee memory;
Thou by thy dial’s shady stealth mayst know
Time’s thievish progress to eternity.
Look, what thy memory can not contain
Commit to these waste blanks, and thou shalt
find
Those children nursed, deliverd’s from the brain,
To take a new acquaintance of the mind.
These offices, so oft as thou wilt look,
Shall profit thee and much enrich thy book.
The teacher: Shakespeare's plays are still popular. Nowаdays many people like them. We laugh
and cry with Shakespeare's characters.
Shakespeare's plays are famous in all countries. In England there is a special Shakespeare's
Memorial Theatre in Stratford – on – Avon. A Shakespeare Festival is held here every year and
people come from all over the world to honor the England greatest dramatist.
(Making a conclusion) I want to know: Do we need Shakespeare's poems today?
