How can I even describe the last two weeks? LifeStyle’s entire staff was running around town like mad. Some of us even went abroad. One staff member took off to Lithuania, while another crossed the Atlantic. I, myself, met loads of interesting people the past two weeks. First off, on Sept. 17, I ran off to the gigantic Mega mall where the opening of Russia’s largest movie theater took place. And they’re not joking. This place rivals any multiplex you’d find in the States, but it’s even better because the seats are like recliners. When I wasn’t too busy thinking about my comfort, I jumped at the opportunity to get to know two Hollywood actors who are currently starring in “The Italian Job” — Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron. Find out what they’re up to and how they like Moscow on Page 14. A week later, on Sept. 24, a friend of mine at MTV invited me down to a special taping, where Blur was to perform “unplagged.” Obviously, I accepted the invitation and headed down to the studios, where I was in for quite the experience. Find out what happened and catch a review of Blur’s concert on Page 13. Like always, I’m not the only one on LifeStyle’s staff who’s been running around. Valeria Paykova jetted off to New York where she’s fallen in love — not with a man, but with a city. Read more on Page 10. Other tireless LifeStyle journalists have been covering all sorts of events. One of the sexiest being the much talked about Dikaya Orkhideya lingerie fashion show. This wasn’t just any runway show either: They went all out Broadway-style. Ninja’s were dropping from the ceiling! For more details, turn to Page 20. This issue is indescribably excellent. We’re talking hot like fudge, people. And that’s hot. Yep, when the clock hits about 1 p.m., there’s nothing better than sitting down at a cool cafe and biting into fresh bread stuffed with all your favorite ingredients. But where can you get good sandwiches in Moscow? We’ve got answers… I 1. Cafe Maner We wrote a glorious and fabulous review of this cafe and LifeStyle’s staff frequents this place at least once a week, which, in itself is another reason to drop by! No, really, LifeStyle’s staff is hot… Anyway, the sandwiches here are close to a foot long and come in many varieties like vegetarian with avocado, smoked chicken and foie gras for the classy folks. And the prices? Except for the foie gras, you can expect to drop only 110-150 rubles. 2. Shokolodnitsa by Taganskaya I must reiterate here, that the only place to get the best eggplant and mozzarella sandwich in Moscow is at the Shokolatnitsa by metro Taganskaya. Unfortunately the other branches only carry My Place chicken and salami. The prices run at about 120 rubles. By the way, these sandwiches are called "panini." How exotic. 3. Phlegmatic Dog A deal at roughly 150 rubles, you can enjoy a tuna salad or tomato and mozzarella cheese sandwich with French fries in this high-tech Internet pub/cafe. Not a bad deal considering these sandwiches will keep you feeling stuffed all day. Cafe Maner But you’ll find the prices worth it when the friendly staff serves you home-baked bread stuffed with French cheeses and crisp veggies. 6. My Place Situated just a hop, skip and a jump from Paveletskaya metro in the newly constructed Riverside Towers office complex is a small cafe that serves a range of quick meals, but the stars of the show are the sandwiches, which cost anywhere from 100-140 rubles. Warning: If you order the "medium" size, beware that you may not finish it all in one sitting. Phlegmatic Dog 4. Cafe Kortilye After reading a fabulous review of this place, LifeStyle decided to go down and give it a try. The verdict is in and the sandwiches here are exceptional. The tuna sandwich garnered rave reviews and at only about 100 rubles? Well, we’ll be coming back. 5. Correa’s This place is for the true epicureans among us. They only use the best ingredients, which also happen to be the most expensive (around 200 rubles). 7. Canadian Bagel The sandwiches here are of the simple, no-frills variety. Actually, the vegetarian is just vegetables stuck between a bagel. But think of the calories you save without the cheese, mayo or mustard. And, by the way, it’s only 100 rubles, so don’t complain! 8. Deli France The name says it all — Deli France. Of course, they only stack the tastiest ingredients on fresh-baked French bread, but they’re pre-made so don’t count on much variety past 4 p.m. The prices are hardly French at all. Sandwiches here only average about 80 rubles. 9. Pir.O.G.I. This cute cafe boasts the cheapest sandwiches on our list coming in at under 80 rubles. However, keep in mind that quality may vary. But really, it’s a pretty good option for a quick snack with friends. 10. Subway You may come here expecting a classic Italian meatball sub, but don’t. These are Russian variations. Jared Fogle wouldn’t have lost that 245 pounds here. However, that doesn’t mean these sandwiches aren’t tasty in their own right and the prices are truly reasonable. Host of MTV’s News Block, Alexander Anatolievich hosted the event, which gathered a crowd of journalists and fashion plates. Although sceptical that items labelled Lee or Wrangler could be stylish (these two names usually conjure up images of housewives and cowboys), LifeStyle was pleasantly surprised. Lee’s new collection goes back to its roots with classic items like bootcut jeans and jean jackets, which rivalled those which one could find at Levi’s or Diesel boutiques. The Wrangler collection looked cute and comfortable. More importantly, there were no cowboy hats and many of the items were stylish enough to wear to Moscow’s most elite clubs. Shopping just got better in Moscow! In this case, that many chefs only make the broth sweeter! LifeStyle > Oct. 03 - 16 A model struts down the catwalk while rocking the Wrangler. It was perfect, walking into the chilly building on a rainy evening, stepping over piles of old beer bottles and into the renovated practice space — the very definition of independent rock or indie-rock. This practice space, like a grungy mini-studio, has become the new hangout for the five young musicians of the band In A Nutshell. However, unlike many young bands, this group doesn’t spend much time sitting and smoking on the couch, and I didn’t see anyone sipping out of a beer bottle. Instead, the drink du jour was a bottle of Lipton Iced Tea and, like true musicians, they’ve mastered how to smoke and play their instruments simultaneously, wasting no time. The fourth got married when she was 25. These women were all smart, pretty and by no means abnormal. It seems to me that Russian women have different mentalities that evolve with age, just like foreign women. Young Russian girls dream about getting married to Prince Charming, just like foreign women. And like foreign women, when Russian women grow up and realize Prince Charmings are few and far between and begin to think about their career aspirations as well as other priorities, they begin to put more emphasis on making themselves happy, rather than settling for Prince Not-SoCharming. But, unfortunately, there are those women whose mentalities don’t change, and this leads to some pitiful stories. In every country, you can find those girls who are so desperate — filled with fear when they assume they’re washed up at 24 — that they settle for the first guy that shows an interest in them. And this, my friends, explains why divorce rates are so high both in Russia and America. But I digress… I’m not proposing that Russian and American women are one and the same, but I am saying that I think the differences are far less evident than the similarities. We’re all fans of “Sex and the City,” we all agree Johnny Depp is hot, and most of us agree that our own happiness doesn’t depend on whether or not we’re married… Unless you’re 44 — then, something might be wrong with you… I’ll take that comment about having an “American mentality” as a compliment: I’m selfreliant, modern and happy, just like my friends, both Russian and expat. 9 Diary of... Before they were called BrainStrom, the group was called “Blue Ink,” and even “The Five Best Guys from Latvia!” “The drummer’s aunt came up with the name, she’s an elderly woman, but she has a lot of ideas,” said musicians Reynard Cowper (vocal), Magic (guitar), Peter Scott Jr. (bass), Nick William Simon (drums) and Mike Minolta (accordion and keyboards). “She lives in America, but when she went to one of our concerts, she said, ‘Your music is a kind of brainstorm…’ And we decided it was a great name for our group.” Even though the group formed way back in 1989, they only achieved international success after performing the song “My Star” at the Eurovision song contest in 2000. Since then, BrainStorm have been boosted up into the spotlight, being recognized by such musical legends as Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe. The musicians don’t waste any time. In May, they released their new album “A Day Before Tomorrow.” In Russia, their last album “Online” is still given airplay, with the hits “Maybe” and “Waterfall” still on heavy television and radio rotation. “We don’t want people to think of us just for the song ‘My Star’ we are looking for new directions and a new sound, and we believe that the best is yet to come.” Instead, it’s the common feeling that can touch anyone from any nation that’s important. Regarding our presence in Russia, we know that we have a Russian audience. If Russians like our music and request it more and more, then we are happy to develop more of it. Because we are putting the same efforts into our promotions in all countries where we see a positive reaction, we always are willing to develop our activities. T LifeStyle > Oct. 03 - 16 Photo special to LifeStyle Interviews Bernard MAGIMEL The guys of BrainStorm are bringing Latvia’s music scene to the world stage. “Globalization is the way of the world it seems and we understand that we can’t really stop it, but in our hearts and souls we are against it.” How do Latvia’s most famous pop stars live today? “…In peace and harmony.” Life is interesting and exciting. At the moment, we are in Cologne, Germany, sitting in the dressing room of VIVA [a German TV studio] and waiting to be on the perform. This is about today. Did winning third place at the Eurovision contest help promote your music in the world? Of course. And as we say — no matter what kind of event you take part in, if you are doing your best and you are who you are, you have nothing to lose (as Eurovision is not our cup of tea, actually). Afterward, “My Star” was a hit in Scandinavia and Belgium, and it was released all across Europe where we consequently toured. So, the answer is “Yes, it helped.” You became more popular in Russia only after releasing “Maybe” and “Colder.” Do you want to boost your presence on the Russian music market? Have you considered releasing an album of songs in Russian? We recorded two songs in Russian a few years ago, but now we have another plan. In music, it doesn’t matter actually in which language the lyrics are. Seeing your performances, there’s always the impression that you’re all closely related to each other. How did you meet? Yes, that’s true. We’ve known each other for ages. We went to the same school. Some of us even went to the same kindergarten. We’re all best friends, and BrainStorm is like another family for us. I read on your site that your single “Colder” continues the theme on your “Online” album about technological progress and globalization pushing aside real human feelings. How important is this subject to you, and would you call yourselves anti-globalizationists? If we are talking about our music, yes, we confront the issue because it is important to us as people to speak about things that affect us. Globalization is the way of the world, it seems, and we understand that we can’t really stop it, but in our hearts and souls we are against it. We think that the identity of the nation that you come from is important, and, in the process of globalization, it is so easy to lose that identity. The only way to really deal with it now is to scrutinize it and look at what’s really going on around you. Music 13 Marissa PAYNE fter much anticipation and talk, Blur finally arrived. Wahlberg laughed and said, “The story that Charlize always insists on telling is my getting sick — I threw up in one of the Mini Coopers…” Theron, laughing, interrupted and corrected Wahlberg, “I do not tell this story. He tells the story himself!” Wahlberg is somewhat of a car fanatic, so he “had a blast” working on the “The Italian Job,” which put him and his co-stars in the driver’s seats of a trio of Mini Coopers for much of the film. When asked about his personal car collection Wahlberg listed an expansive collection but then showed his soft side for environmentalism…or was that a joke: “I have van, convertible, two four-door cars, a sports car, and an SUV…but I’m trading them all in for a hybrid.” Despite his forward thinking, Wahlberg fans seem interested in his more “primitive” endeavor – “Planet of the Apes.” Will Wahlberg participate in the sequel? Without hesitation he replied, “I agreed to do it if [the film’s director] Tim Burton would, but Tim’s been quoted as saying he would rather jump out of a window than do another ‘Planet of the Apes’ and I certainly understand why…” Speaking of primates, the subject of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s bid for governor of California surfaced. Would other Hollywood stars actually vote for him? Happily, Theron answered, “Well, I’m not an American, so I’ll let Mark answer this one.” Wahlberg, once again adding some humor to the event stated, “Yeah, he promised us bigger trailers…” So, now you might be asking whether I liked the film or not. Well, nestled in one of the enormous semi-reclining chairs of the new KinoStar with some classic movie popcorn and a Coke, I watched the film without looking at my watch, checking my phone or falling asleep. “The Italian Job” kept me entertained the entire time, and it was just how the actors described it: “A good oldfashioned heist film.” Mark Wahlberg thinks about what to say during the press conference held before the premiere. I’m always ready to buy any pants that have plenty of pockets, because I find I never have space to put all my things. I was given this Bizo long-sleeved sweater six months ago. These demi-saison black sports-style boots cost me $200, and I bought them at the Ecco store on Tverskaya. ACCESSORIES: These beads made of light-colored seashells were woven together in Tunisia, and I bought them for 15 dinars (which is around $10) while I was on vacation there. I took a long time choosing, but I finally found what I was after. I just wanted to find something that would bring me closer to the real people in Tunisia. I also have this silver cross on a silver chain. My grandmother gave me the cross, and I bought the chain 10 years ago in Venice. In one of my pockets, I have an Alcatel 715 mobile phone. I bought it not long ago for $186. HAIRSTYLE & MAKE-UP: I pay 500-600 rubles at the Persona Beauty Salon to get my hair done. The salon is on one of the old side streets near Mayakovskaya. On June 27, the company celebrated the 10th anniversary of its first shop in Russia, which is located at 9 Petrovsky Bulvar, and just like then, this show was also amazing. R This year’s collection, whose advertising campaign was titled “Mechanical Mind,” was as memorable as the famous American label Victoria’s Secret fashion show. When the show opened with a brigade of military men and music, the 5000 guests thought it was another terrorist attack. But then it turned out that it was the trick of the show’s director. They chose this beginning because it just so happens that the “military” style is the theme of the Fall/Winter 2003-2004 season. The style influenced most of the world’s fashion collections, and the new season will be totally ruled by the military style. John Galliano follows the trend and uses not only khaki, but also elements of military uniforms (laces, buttons etc.) These aggressive motives are mixed with wild nature images, which have also been popular among the major fashion houses. Roberto Cavalli continues presenting snakes in different formats and shapes, and Naory’s flower garlands represent all the wild colors of tropical jungles. Another demonstration of the total aggression is prevalence of the color red and Millesia and Argentovivo’s topical red combined with black Absolutely opposite the military theme is the classical theme of femininity. The new collection is based on the polarity of these two styles. Nina Ricci takes us back to thin laces and bows, Versace turns underwear into an evening gown, and Valentino creates a fairy “Christmas” collection, with translucent lace. The third trend this season is the eastern motif. Pictures from kama sutra are striking in Roberto Cavalli’s collection, Blumarine experiments with Japanese motives and Ritratti uses eastern cucumbers on black silk. “Mechanical Mind” attracted the attention of all high-profile fashion folk, who actually always make up the majority of Dikaya Orkhideya’s guests, among whom are fashion designers Yelena Suprun, Julia Dalakian and Masha Tsigal, as well as numerous models and pop band Hi-Fi with their numerous retinue. Head of Russkiy Standart Rustam Tariko was alone — his girlfriend is pregnant and is about to give birth to twins, so she couldn’t be present. But the stars of the evening were none other than woman of the world Kseniya Sobchyak and her new boyfriend Leonid Nerushenko (part of pop music collective Dinamit). They spent the evening hiding from the importunate paparazzi in the darkest corners of Gostiniy Dvor. His job — to make everyone feel happy after a meal, which is not an easy task considering everyone has different taste in food. But Safiulin likes challenges and works wonders in order to find the right key to every guest’s stomach. G Have you always been inspired by the idea to become a chef? Although I didn’t quite know what I wanted to do, I knew what I didn’t want to do: For example, I didn’t want to become a policeman, an engineer or a cosmonaut, like everyone else did. One day when I was passing by the culinary college, I realized that I wanted to study cookery. My major was pastries and sweets. Maybe I didn’t have a natural talent for cooking but I wanted to develop my professional skills to become better and better. Thanks to my mother who cooked delicious food at home, I grew up around nice homey dishes. How do you find the right balance between the presentation of the dish and its culinary content? First of all, Hunter is not the kind of a restaurant where the stress is on the culinary design. For us, the most important thing is definitely the taste of food. People keep coming to our restaurant not because the food looks fancy, but because it tastes good. We want to make each guest feel happy and relaxed. The presentation of the food is of course very important but the taste comes first to us. A chef is akin to an artist. He creates things for people to appreciate it. In Russia, where we don’t go to restaurants as often as people in the West do, a visit to a restaurant is still regarded as some festive event. If you’re a guy, you should go get a shag haircut like Jennifer Aniston used to have. This is a must-see. It’s definitely got that old-fashioned jazz feel that screams classiness. It’s a cozy way to spend a fall evening. The food is pretty good, too. One LifeStyle employee claims Le Club offers Moscow’s best Caesar salad and it’s only 220 rubles! Other items on offer are sushi and an array of fish dishes, which go anywhere from 4001200 rubles. Wine can get pricey (it starts about around 250 rubles per glass), but drinks are fairly reasonable. Justo 9 Bol. Tolmachevsky Per. DF (as its patrons call it) is huge! It boasts three highly stylized halls each themed on a different city — Milan, Paris and New York — with different atmospheres and a total floor space of 1200 sq. meters. If you’re feeling crazy when you walk in, head straight to the area dubbed “New York.” It’s the biggest and can comfortably handle 200 people at a time. Its “Night Drive” dance floor is one of the largest in town. For a slightly tamer experience, hang a left as you walk in and head to the second largest area — Paris. Its dance floor is a lot smaller. It is by far the tamest, probably because it’s mainly a sitdown restaurant, which offers Russian, French, American and Italian cuisine, is Milan. Here you’ll also find 74 kinds of cocktails. If nothing else, come here because it used to be called “Super Pooper.” Kult 5 Yauznaya Ul. No cover, light face control Kult is one of the coolest venues in Moscow. It’s located in a basement and it’s not that close to a metro, but it’s worth the trek. This place sweats style, which is probably why they’ve been known to turn away people when the club’s half empty. Come in small groups to hear some of Moscow’s coolest DJs who spin a nice mix of ambient, jazz and trip-hop and eat a meal. They make a killer Mojito and their Samurai is worth checking out. However, she seems to have dropped her strict guides, because Mio’s face control is fairly democratic. Fashionable DJs spin electronic music on Thursdays and synth pop on Fridays. The dance floor is a five by 10 meter patch laid with slippery tiles — perfect for all you moonwalker Michael Jackson fans out there. In a word, Mio’s good. The prices seem a little high for the crowd however, which is mostly made up of young student types: A shot of whiskey or a half-liter beer costs 150 rubles, and a shot of rum will set you back 120 rubles. Kult In your pockets: $70 Mood: Jetson-style futuristic experience Getting in: No cover, strict face control This club/restaurant hosts some of Moscow’s most exciting parties. For example, on July 12, they hosted an Italian night party for which they flew in Italian MC Fabio Cos and a chef and on Sept. 6 they hosted South African DJ Fresh. Popular Moscow DJs Chernov, Slava Finist and Kambala are also known to spin here. The futuristic interior is impressively laid out on four floors, however all the floors are rather tiny and there is no true dance floor: You just sort of have to move where you find space. The basement and top floors are mainly for chillin’. The top floor brought LifeStyle’s editor back to her childhood — the floor, ceiling and seats were all covered in shag carpet. The middle floors have glass tables and chairs which can be invisible in a drunken stupor, so be careful. Cocon’s patrons are young, well-off and fashionable. Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg ate lunch here, and they liked it! Light face control This club has been the Mecca for young Russians since its inception. The place is packed to the brim, which can be either good or bad, depending on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking to meet people, this place is great. Just making your way to the restroom, you’ll have the opportunity to talk to about 20 people, with a chance that many of them will be cute. However, if you want to dance, ready your elbows because you’ll have to use them in order to get a space on the dance floor. However, on a recent Saturday night visit, Propaganda looked really, really empty, but now that fall’s here you can look forward to the return of the crowds because the resident DJs at Propaganda are among the best in Moscow. Zeppelin 7 Prospekt Mira, Bldg. 3 Metro: Sukharevskaya Tel: 207-2392 In your pockets: $200 Mood: My mind’s on my money and my money’s on my mind Getting in: Brace yourself for the face control Zeppelin well deserves to be called a “proper nightclub.” What does this mean? Strict face control, regular customers, a dozen up-andcoming models on the dance floor and several VIP nooks and crannies where prices would shock even the most prosperous Muscovite. Zeppelin has it all. Casuals are not let in. However, exceptions are made for beautiful girls (the joint swarms with them), famous and distinguished personalities, exceptionally well-dressed clientele and people wearing Byblos glasses. Nowhere has a revolving lineup of dance music’s biggest marquee attractions put down stronger roots than at Ministerstvo. Nevertheless, the crowd of clubbers who frequent Ministerstvo is thankfully unobtrusive, but chic. Ministerstvo’s got one of the coolest interiors or any club in Moscow. With a good dance floor, invigorating drinks and a decent sound system, this downtown space is now a dancemusic paradise and, possibly, the best club in the city. At Ministerstvo you’re almost always destined to be in the right place at the right time. One LifeStyle employee considers B2 the best live concert venue in town: “The stage is high off the ground so you can see the band clearly from any place in the room.” The crowd is cool and young and the food is tasty and cheap. Their drinks cost about as much as the food, if not more, but the cocktails are mixed well. What to do here? Eat, drink, dance, meet people, and the list goes on… News Pub 18 Petrovka Ul. Aries You should be feeling especially warm and loving this time of year, and therefore romance is very much on your mind. Time spent with a love partner from a distant state or foreign country might seem especially appealing, but it may end up in heartbreak. This is a great day to schedule an intimate evening alone with your nearby friend, and see where it takes you. Taurus Some very erotic dreams could have you waking up in a strange mood. You could be longing for a romantic encounter, but the impact is likely to be stronger than that. You might find that these intense dreams have stimulated your creative juices, and therefore if you don’t have a project you’re currently working on, ideas could be flooding your imagination. Let them stew for a while. Gemini You might find yourself reeling from shock when an old friend suddenly seems to be showing a romantic interest in you. Conflicting emotions could come up, but if you’re available, don’t write it off. All signs are that there could well be potential for a good relationship with this person. Don’t feel, however, that you have to either jump right into it or forget the whole thing. Cancer Soon you may be asked to speak to a gathering of people, or perhaps lead a discussion group. You tend to be shy, but you should go for it! You’ll enjoy being in the limelight, however temporary it is. You’ll certainly shine, and others around you may pay you sincere compliments. Afterwards, go to a small and intimate cafe with some friends, or with a love partner. And enjoy the season. Leo Romance continues to soar for you during the fortnight. You should be feeling especially sexy, and you’re likely to attract admiring glances from those around you, including strangers. If you’re single, you might even attract an exciting new love partner. If you’re already involved, your beloved could fall in love with you all over again. Schedule an intimate evening alone together, and make the most of it! LifeStyle > Oct. 03 - 16 Virgo You could be feeling like a millionaire lately, as money matters seem to be surpassing your expectations by a long shot. You might want to spend some time fixing up your home, or perhaps shopping for yourself. Do you have a hot date this weekend? A sexy new item might make your friend’s eyes pop! Increased self-confidence adds even more juice to an already enhanced appearance. Dress in your favorite colors, and have fun! Libra Someone you’ve never met before will walk right past you or sit down next to you on the metro. You’ll find this person exceedingly attractive, and therefore might decide to go out and say hello. You might discover not only a physical attraction, but an intellectual compatibility as well! Unfortunately, something beyond the surface will drive you away, and for good reason. If you’re single, don’t worry, there’s more fish in the sea. If you’re already involved, well, then who cares! Scorpio Career and money matters continue to go well for you and romance is probably on the rise. Your life may be the envy of many around you, but you probably feel that there’s still something missing from it. This is a good day to explore metaphysical and spiritual studies. It’s a time of transition, and this sort of interest can make things easier for you — especially if those close to you share your interest. Sagittarius Romance and creativity are the driving force in your life right now. You might find feelings for a very special person provide lots of inspiration for creative projects. Your creative energies make you that much more attractive to the one you love the most. This could, therefore, prove to be a very emotionally and aesthetically satisfying time for you. Make the most of it! Also you may feel the urge to calll that special someone. Well, go on! Now is the time! Capricorn You tend to be down-to-earth and practical, but now you’re feeling like indulging in some flights of fancy. Romance or fantasy novels could be especially appealing to you right now. You might even toy with the idea of writing one of your own! If you’re currently involved romantically, your sweetheart might want to take you out for a special dinner. Enjoy your fortnight to the utmost and make time for friends. Aquarius An affectionate letter, phone call, or e-mail could come to you from an old friend. Gratitude could be expressed for favors performed in the past. This, of course, is going to make you feel very warm and loving toward this person, and want to reciprocate in kind. Invite this person for coffee and have a long conversation with him or her. The bond between you is strong; this is not a friendship you’ll want to let go. Pisces Have you been thinking about changing careers? You might hear of some opportunities soon, possibly through a colleague. This may be just the right time to make a change, as positive developments are indicated for you professionally. Make yourself a cup of tea and then sit down at your desk and list your options. Delivery Service Oct. 03 - 16 < LifeStyle He Knows What You Need The Love DOCTOR So Fresh, Yet So Dirty Dear Love Doctor, My new girlfriend is great. She’s smart, beautiful and great in bed. But there’s just one problem: She looks exactly like my sister. This is freaking me out. How should I deal with this? John Alfonso Dear Mr. Alfonso, The answer to your question depends a lot on how good-looking your sister is. If she’s a babe, and this girl’s equally a babe, who cares if they have the same-colored eyes or whatever? And feel free to send me your sister’s photograph and phone number, so I can confirm. Dear Love Doctor, I recently got divorced after an unhappy — and mostly sexless — marriage and decided to sow some wild oats. I’m dating a man right now who is, physi- cally, the man of my dreams. But he insists on having sex in the strangest places you can think of — he even paid a militsia officer to let him do it in his car (I hope he didn’t film anything). I like it and everything, but he is just unable to do it in a normal place — in a bed, he just peters out, if you will forgive the expression. How can I tame this sex-crazed dragon? I Miss My Bed Dear Bed Lady, I’m glad you decided to write me. Personally, the venue where love occurs doesn’t matter as much to the Love Doctor as does the sweet, sweet act of Love itself. Yours Truly is equally capable of getting nasty in the comfort of his own spacious waterbed or in a gondola on the watery byways of Venice (By the way, I can say from hard-earned experience back when I was a Love Graduate Student that it Join L i f e S t y l e ’ s T u s o v k a ! And you’ll have a chance to be in LifeStyle! Don’t miss out! is best in such a situation not to rock the boat too hard unless you want your partner to get soaking wet, in the negative sense of the expression). What’s important between you and your partner is mutual compatibility. Maybe he’s just bored when the only things underneath your two bouncin’ bodies is warm sheets and a mattress — or maybe he’s trying to impress you with his wild ways. It’s important to find out, especially if you decided to move beyond the wild-oats stage and this guy becomes your regular partner in my favorite pastime of hide-the-salami. (Or, maybe he gets turned on at the sight of Russian police officers, which would make him one scaaaaary cat in my book, to say the least.) Love is a two-way thing (OK, sometimes three-way), and you need to have more than just physical give-andtake. Sit your fella down on the bed, have a heart-to-heart — and, hopefully, adopt a reclining position and get some other organs involved. Dear Love Doctor, I’m a good-lucking heterosexual man who is tired of working for a living in an office. I’m looking for alternatives, and I’ve come up with one — yes, the sex trade. I love sex and like to have it as often as possible with as many people as I can. Why can’t I use it to pay the bills? Tell me, Love Doctor, are there enough lonely women in Moscow to create a viable market for gigolos? And should I tell my mom? Wanting To Be Meat on the Market Dear Meat, No and Definitely No. Until next time! Oct. 03 - 16 < LifeStyle Travel We’re Going North! Photos special to LifeStyle Bernard MAGIMEL orporate relaxation is a difficult business. On the one hand, it may become a combination of feasting and dancing, but on the other, you can not only have a good time, but bring the team closer together. In summer it’s easy to find a dozen ways to entertain a team of 15 to 20 people. There’s golf, polo, paintball, kayaking, parachute jumping, and even the sea and sun of the South. But how can you entertain a team in during the rainy and cold autumn? The travel agency Tour Land offers an expedition to the North Pole in November, the rainiest and coldest month of C autumn. You need to take some different travel routes, otherwise you end up going to the same place all the time: Safaris in Kenya or diving on the Coral Reef can get dull. “Night November” is not just an unforgettable trip to the North Pole and Spitzbergen, but also a true test of a team’s survival in the Northern winter. Visiting Spitzbergen and the town of Longier is the goal of the Night November trip. Longier is one of the only three small towns on all of Spitzbergen. It is located directly on the shore of the Arctic Ocean. This means you will have a wonderful opportu- Tours around Russia Russian Language Lessons Train \ Plane Tickets Visa support tel./fax: 7-095-795-0927 e-mail: alanskaya@co.ru LifeStyle > Oct. 03 - 16 http://russiatravel-pdtours.netfirms.com nity to see the polar night and enjoy the famous Aurora Borealis! For those who truly appreciate wild nature, Spitzbergen is a paradise on the endless spaces of the white Arctic wasteland. It is a place where you can see such Arctic fauna as polar bears and reindeer, which we are used to only seeing in zoos or on the Discovery channel. But there is one “but”: The weather on Spitzbergen is changeable, constantly under the influence of the Arctic Ocean, and can alter in the blink of an eye. So, weather permitting, in the morning you can climb one of the rather steep hills to look on the northern town from above. Against the background of dark water and eternal block of ice of the most mysterious ocean on earth, it looks like a real toy town. The Basecamp hotel also looks like a toy, and this is the place where you will be spending several days in November. The hotel was built from the remains of wooden structures from expeditions of the last two centuries. It’s a unique idea! You can’t help but feeling like a polar explorer. If you’re scared of going to a land of primeval nature simply because you’re afraid of the cool, there is no reason to be alarmed. You will be given a free set of polar clothing! And you will definitely find something to buy at the local stores Îòïå÷àòàíî â ÈÄ “Ìåäèà-Ïðåññà”. 125993, ÃÑÏ-3, Ìîñêâà, À-40, óë. Ïðàâäû, 24. and supermarkets. There, along with practical and unusual-looking winter clothing, you can also buy varied arctic accessories and devices. They may be useful not just in the Far North, but even in winter conditions in other parts of the world. The cost of the program also includes an excursion program in Spitzbergen and a festive supper at the Huset restaurant. The local cuisine may become a fetish, and not just for connoisseurs. I won’t get into details, but I’ll just say that you won’t even find many of the dishes at Huset in Norway itself! The tour includes a visit of several hours to the first Russian floating station, North Pole-32. When else will you have the chance to be a real polar explorer on a floating arctic station on the North Pole or see magnificent arctic landscapes? I don’t know about you, but I would go to the North Pole again! I won’t even talk about my colleagues, mature people who would also love to try polar exploration again. And why not? A holiday on Spitzbergen is not just a good way to have an enjoyable time, but also an excellent test of the viability and unity of the team.
