The mtDNA region coding for ND5/ND6 subunits of NADH-dehydrogenase mitochondrial DNA amplified in the
polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was studied, using the analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), in
five species of smelts (the family Osmeridae). The divergence of mtDNA nucleotide sequences between the species was
in the range from 11.9 (Hypomesus nipponensis and H. japonicus) to 24.7% (Osmerus mordax dentex and Mallotus villosus catervarius). The level of genetic divergence between populations was 0.32% for H. nipponensis, 0.08 to 0.15% for
H. japonicus, and 0.025% for Osmerus mordax dentex. The absence of common haplotypes allows one to differentiate
between closely related species of smelts, which can be helpful in solving problems of systematics and biogeography of
