Identify the tenses of the verbs in bold: Past
Simple/Past Continuous/Past Perfect.
 1. When I reached the front, the police
had stopped the traffic.

We use the Past Simple
• to describe finished actions. — для
описания законченных действий.
• to tell the main events in a story in order.
— чтобы рассказать об основных
событиях в истории по порядку.
I ran forward and pushed through the
crowd.
 We use the Past Perfect
• to talk about an action that happened before
another action in the past. — чтобы говорить о
действии, которое произошло до того другого
действия в прошлом.
They were doing it because they had stolen a
statue.
 We use the Past Continuous
• to describe things which were in progress at a
specific time in the past. — чтобы описать вещи,
которые были в стадии разработки в
определенный момент времени в прошлом.
It was 10 o’clock. I was jogging. — Было 10 часов. Я
бегал трусцой.
• for temporary situations/habits. — для
временных ситуаций / привычек.
I was staying in Ohio. — Я находился в Огайо.
• for longer actions interrupted by shorter ones. I
was running when I saw some people. — для более
длительных действий, прерываемых более
