3.4.Translate the text «Principle of Operation of
the Four-Stroke Petrol Engine»
The internal combustion engine is called so because fuel is burned
directly inside the engine itself. Fuel and air are mixed in the
carburetor before they go into the cylinder. In the cylinder this mixture
is exploded by a spark.
Most automobile engines work on a 4-stroke cycle.
The operating cycle of the four-stroke petrol engine includes:
1. inlet stroke (intake valve opens),
2. compression stroke (both valves closed),
3. power stroke (both valves closed),
4. exhaust stroke (exhaust valve is opened).
In the first or inlet stroke the piston moves down the cylinder,
sucking in a mixture of air and fuel through an inlet valve.
The valve shuts and in the second or compression stroke the piston
moves up, compressing the gases. At this moment a spark runs
across the spark plug, exploding the mixture.
The gases from the explosion are heated greatly and they push the
piston down. This is the third or power stroke, in which the crankshaft
revolves.
In the last fourth or exhaust stroke the piston moves up, pushing
the residual gases out through the exhaust valve.

Good afternoon! Can you help me?
Hello! Yes, please?
The engine doesn’t start. Maybe the pistons and valves
are in disorder.
Let’s have a look. Well, they are in order.
And what about the crankshaft or spark plugs?
Don’t worry. Just a moment. My god! There is no fuel in
the tank. How can you drive?!
Really? Oh, I forgot to fill in the tank! I’m sorry to trouble
you!
No trouble at all. You are welcome!

4. Choose the right answer:
1. The internal combustion engine is called so because the fuel and
air mixture is burned
a) inside the engine.
b) outside the engine.
2. The intake stroke is called so because during moving down the
piston
a) the inlet valve opens to intake the charge of fuel into the cylinder.
b) the inlet valve is closed and the mixture is compressed.
3. The compression stroke is a stroke
a) when the inlet valve opens to intake a charge of fuel into the cylinder.
b) when the inlet valve is closed and the mixture is compressed.
4. On the power stroke
a) the spark plugs ignite the mixture, both valves are closed during its combustion.
b) the exhaust valve is opened and the residual gas flows through the exhaust valve
into the atmosphere.
5. On the exhaust stroke
a) the spark plugs ignite the mixture , both valves are closed during its combustion.
b) the exhaust valve is opened and the residual gas flows through the exhaust valve
into the atmosphere.
